How to Download SPSS

The latest version of SPSS (29) is available for all Leeds Beckett students on all University PCs.

To install the software on your own device, please fill out the SPSS Download form for instructions on downloading the files for your Mac or PC.

Please note: SPSS is currently not compatible with the latest version of MacOS Sonoma, released on 26 September 2023. IBM and Apple are aware of the issue.

Please note: SPSS is not available to download on a Chromebook.

Common error messages on SPSS

ACCORDION OPTIONS: enable collapse / start fully collapsed
ACCORDION: Converted tabs - this tab opens by default

There appears to be a license for SPSS for Windows, but it is invalid.

This command not executed.

Specific symptom number: 26

Action

  • SPSS has detected that your computer's system date and time has not been set correctly. You should correct the system date and time and try again.
  • Right click on the time displayed in the Notification Area at the bottom of the screen and select the Adjust Date/Time option. Ensure you are logged on to your computer as the Administrator.
  • If the date is incorrect it will invalidate the licence for SPSS. Amend the date and also check that the time is set to GMT London standard. Once Complete, Click on OK to finish and then try to launch SPSS again.

When I submit the license request, I encounter the following error:

Error 101

You have not been authorised to receive a license. Please make sure the Authorisation Code is entered correctly.

Action

  • Ensure the authorisation code is entered correctly and submit the request again.
  • Please note that the authorisation code should be entered exactly as seen.
  • If this fails, go into your SPSS folder e.g. (c:\Program Files\SPSS) find and remove the file LSERVRC reopen SPSS and re-enter the authorisation code.

During the installation, one of the following errors occurs:

Error 1317

Cannot create directory.

C:\ProgramData\Application Data\SPSS

Error 1320

The specified path is too long.

C:\ProgramData\Application Data\SPSS

Action

1. Go to Start and click on Computer.

2. Go to the Organize menu (in the upper left-hand corner). Select Folder and Search Options.

3. Go to the View tab, choose one of the following options, and click OK:

  • Select/Check Show hidden files and folders.
  • De-select/Uncheck Hide protected operating system files.

4. Browse to C:\ProgramData.

5. Locate the Application Data shortcut and click and drag this to another location, such as your desktop – if this will not move, rename it eg. AppData.

6. Install SPSS.

Note:

From Step 5 - After complete install of SPSS, return the name for Application Data shortcut

to “Application Data” and do not continue with the rest of the solution.

7. Once the installation is complete, move the Application Data shortcut to its original location.

8. Go to Start and click on Computer.

9. Go to the Organize menu (in the upper left-hand corner). Select Folder and Search Options.

10. Go to the View tab, choose one of the following options, and click OK:

  • Select/Check Show hidden files and folders.
  • De-select/Uncheck Hide protected operating system files.

 11. Close the Window.

To restore the settings which existed prior to solving the problem:

  • Go to Start and click on Computer.
  • Go to the Organize menu (in the upper left-hand corner). Select Folder and Search Options.

Go to the View tab, choose one of the following options, and click OK:

  • Select/Check Show hidden files and folders.
  • De-select/Uncheck Hide protected operating system files.
  • Click ‘Apply’ and then OK.
  • Close Computer window and your original settings will now be restored.
