Welcome to the Leeds Beckett Library web pages for Visitors and Guests.

Registered Guest Users and SCONUL Access Scheme members can use the Library between 08:30 and 19:00 throughout the year - please bring your Guest User or SCONUL Card with youOvernight access is for Leeds Beckett students and staff only (Campus Cards required).

Other visitors can use Sheila Silver Library at different times throughout the year. The following times are planned for 2018/19 but may change at short notice:

Peak use time for Leeds Beckett students (from 1 April 2019) No visitor access
Summer (from 27 May 2019) 08:30-19:00

Visitors can access the Library on most weekends 08:30-19:00. However, weekend access may not be allowed during the peak use time in April and May. Photo ID is required for Sheila Silver Library and you will need to sign in at the Library Welcome Desk.

Visitors may access Headingley Library 08:30-19:00 throughout the year. 

If you would like to borrow books you need to register as a Guest User - see below. 

Licensing restrictions means Guest Users aren't able to use our PCs or electronic resources but you can bring in your own laptop and use the wireless network. Guest Users from participating universities can use the eduroam wi-fi service.

Registering as a Guest User


If you are a member of staff, postgraduate, part-time, distance learning or placement from a Higher Education institution participating in the SCONUL Access Scheme you can apply for free Guest User membership of the Library. There is no requirement to apply for a Guest User membership if you have Band R (Reference only) status from your home institution. In this case please bring your student ID and have your Sconul ‘Access approved email’ with you or available on your mobile device in the event of being asked whilst visiting.

Membership lasts for a maximum of 3 years from the date of your application unless your course or contract ends earlier. If you are still eligible you can reapply for membership. Please ask at your home institution for further information.


Retired Leeds Beckett staff

Please complete the Guest User Registration Form (see below).  

Your status will be confirmed by Leeds Beckett University.  

No documentation required.

Membership is initially for 12 months.


Leeds Beckett alumni

Annual membership is £50.  

There is a reduced fee of £30 if registering as an alumnus for the first time.  

Please complete the Guest User Registration Form (see below) and provide proof of graduation.


Affiliated organisations

You can apply to be a Guest User if you are a:

  • Leeds City Councillor / Senior Officer of Leeds City Council
  • teacher employed by Leeds Education Authority whose school participates in a partnership with Leeds Beckett University
  • member of West Yorkshire Society of Architects
  • accredited researchers of Leeds Library and Information Service (formerly the Riding Scheme)

If you are applying for membership through an affiliated organisation please complete the Guest User Registration Form (see below) and enclose a letter detailing your connection with Leeds Beckett University.

Membership is usually for 12 months.


Personal membership

Members of the public can apply to be a Guest User.

Please complete the Guest User Registration Form and enclose a letter stating why you wish to use the Library and which resources you would like to use for educational and research purposes. We will contact you for payment once your application has been approved.

Annual membership is £75.


Students between courses

It is possible for those students who have finished one course at Leeds Beckett, and will be beginning another course at Leeds Beckett in the next academic year, to borrow items between the two periods. Please note this scheme is not open to students on short language courses.

Applying to be a Guest User

Remember to include the necessary documentation.

You can also collect a form from the Library.

We will process your application within 5 working days.  

Details about collecting your Guest User card and further information about Library services will be sent to you.

Guest User Borrowing Information

Guest Users can borrow 5 items, no Short Loans or audio visual resources.

These will be automatically renewed by the Library for up to 10 weeks unless they are requested by someone else. We will email you if your items have been requested so please check regularly. We'll only fine if you don't return on time at £2 per day.

If you want to borrow something already on loan please put a reservation on the item.
