Student Skills: Self-assessment, support and development

Welcome

This guide will help you develop your student skills.

There is more to being a successful student than academic skills like critical reading and effective writing. You also need to look after your wellbeing, engage with available support and know when to seek assistance. Reflecting on all of these skills will help you identify your current strengths and weaknesses. This can then inform your planning and support your future progress.

To help with this, on this page you can:

  1. Explore the help and guidance available with student skills at Leeds Beckett.
  2. Self-assess your student skills, identifying areas for potential improvement.
  3. Write an action plan to support you in developing your student skills.

Assess your skills

Use this short worksheet to assess your current student skills.

The worksheet suggests some key areas to help get you started.

However, you should also reflect more broadly yourself. Which skills are already your strengths? Which other ones could you usefully improve? There may be other areas like group work or IT to consider.

Make a plan

Use this template to make an action plan to improve your student skills:

You might also want to consider broader development goals. For example, have you reviewed the Careers Advice pages, to see how Leeds Beckett can support your employability?
