Skills for Learning: English Language & Academic English

Overview

Communicating effectively in English is essential for success at university. You might have always spoken English or have learnt it as an additional language. These pages will enable you to further develop your language knowledge and skills.

Are these pages for you?

  • English Language: resources for students who have learnt English as an Additional Language (EAL).
  • Academic English: resources which are useful for all students.

What is the difference between the 'English Language' and 'Academic English' resources?

English Language refers to the knowledge and skills needed to be proficient in a general setting. Some of you will have learnt English as an additional language. To study at Leeds Beckett University, you will have met our English Language requirements. These are in addition to the academic requirements for your course.

Academic English is the language and skills needed to study at university level. This is a specialised use of language. Many students need to develop this aspect of their language throughout their time at university.

How to access further support

EAL Drop In sessions: These take place on a regular basis in term time. An English Language tutor will be on hand throughout to answer general questions about how to approach university assignments. All workshops are free of charge and all Leeds Beckett students are welcome.

Appointments: These are individual appointments with an English Language tutor. Appointments are free of charge and any Leeds Beckett student can book.

Academic Skills Modules: We have online academic skills modules within MyBeckett for all levels of university study. These modules will help your academic development and support your success at LBU. You can work through the modules at your own pace, revisiting them as required.

Workshop recordings: You may also wish to watch the recordings from our interactive workshops. All the recordings can be found on the Skills for Learning Workshops page, and you can watch our interactive workshop focusing on Understanding Academic English & Academic Integrity below.
