Use Essay X-ray to help you to write your first academic essay. Choose from the model sentences in each section to build skeleton paragraphs. Then, copy and paste your sentences into Word to create an outline for your essay, before adding your own words about your topic.
Please note that this tool is designed for essay-type assignments only. Essay X-ray is designed to help you become familiar with essay writing, but it won't do the work for you! You will need to add your own ideas from your knowledge and reading in order to put together a successful essay.
Remember to copy and save your work regularly to avoid losing the text.
*It's also good practice to avoid simply using the first sentence in each section repeatedly as this will help to avoid high similarity scores when you submit your work via Turnitin.*

This tool was funded by LBU's Centre for Teaching and Learning as part of the Teaching Excellence Project scheme. Essay X-ray is the result of a collaboration between a Senior Lecturer (Dr Chris Till, Sociology), an Academic Skills Tutor (Dr Laura Key, Library Academic Support Team) and a Digital Learning Designer (Joe Maxwell), together with student partners in the School of Social Sciences.
