The Library: Research Visibility

ORCID

ORCID  provides a persistent digital identifier that distinguishes you from other researchers and ensures your research outputs and activities are correctly attributed to you. It is integrated into many systems used by publishers, funders and institutions and supports automatic links among all your professional activities.

ORCID is designed to take admin work off your shoulders, by giving you a unique means of identifying you as a contributor to the full range of academic outputs. It is a free service that provides an overview of all your research outputs, grants and other activities, connects to other applications and – when it is time – can help provide you with the data you need for the REF, promotions, or funding. It is a fantastic time saver at those points, as everything you need will already be in one place.

ORCIDs are for people not projects, they are permanent and you should keep it for life! Share it – it helps identify you. Your ORCID is a 16 digit number linked to a profile which you can make public via the ORCID website, links between ORCID and trusted organisations (funders, publishers etc.) mean your research is publicly showcased and moves with you if you leave Leeds Beckett.

Why ORCID is useful

  • Increase visibility of your research activities
  • Show an overview over your professional activities
  • Links all outputs, even if they were published under different or abbreviated names
  • Feeds to and from databases - can be automatically populated from data sources, and then feeds out to other databases that compile citation metrics and alternative metrics
  • Populate your Symplectic profile and vice versa if you give ORCID the rights permissions. Providing an ORCID ID is rapidly becoming mandatory amongst publishers and funders.
