Accessibility Statement for Figshare

This accessibility statement applies to https://figshare.leedsbeckett.ac.uk/

This website is run for Leeds Beckett University. It is designed to be used by as many people as possible. The text should be clear and simple to understand. You should be able to:

  • zoom in up to 300% without problems
  • navigate most of the public website using just a keyboard
  • navigate most of the public website using speech recognition software
  • use most of the public website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)

We’ve also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.

AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.

How accessible this website is

Some parts of this website are not fully accessible:

  • Some alternative text does not serve the equivalent purpose
  • Some content structure is not available to assistive technologies
  • The contrast ratio is not sufficient for some interface components
  • Some additional content is not dismissible without moving the pointer hover or keyboard focus and it obscures other content
  • There is no 'Skip to Main Content' link on the website
  • The keyboard focus indicator is not always visible
  • Navigation is not consistent across the website
  • Some user-generated files and previews of said files may be inaccessible. Figshare contains user uploaded theses, datasets and external resources. We have not tested these for accessibility and they may be inaccessible.
  • On some pages there is the option to select Grid view and List view. When Grid view is selected each item title will be read twice by a screen reader, therefore selecting List view may make the page easier to navigate

Technical information about the website’s accessibility

Leeds Beckett University is committed to making its websites accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

Compliance status

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard, due to the non-compliances and exemptions listed below.

Non-accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.

Non-compliance accessibility regulations

Some alternative text does not serve the equivalent purpose (the banner on the Home page is an image of the text “Thesis and Data Repository Data”, but the alternative text is “Leeds Beckett University banner”). This fails WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.1.1 Non-text Content.

Some content structure is not available to assistive technologies (Thesis and Research Data Repository (the text mentioned above) is not styled as H1, there is no H1 on the search page, resource titles are labelled as H2 but should not be styled as Headings). This fails WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.3.1: Info and Relationships.

The contrast ratio is not sufficient for some interface components (the outline of the search box on all pages is 1.36 until it is selected). This fails WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.4.11 Non-text Contrast.

Some additional content is not dismissible without moving the pointer hover or keyboard focus and it obscures other content (the author name on Home, Categories and Search pages). This fails WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.4.13 Content on Hover or Focus.
There is no ‘Skip to main content’ link on the website. This fails WCAG 2.2 success criterion 2.4.1 (Bypass Blocks). We have reported this to the supplier and they are investigating the issue.

The keyboard focus indicator is not always visible (when you are viewing a dataset, the keyboard focus is not visible after “Log in” until “Explore more content”). This fails WCAG 2.2 success criterion 2.4.7 Focus Visible.

Navigation is not consistent across the website. On the Search page search terms are entered into the Search content area, however on other pages search terms are entered into the search box. Links available above page content (e.g. All, Categories, Groups, Search) not consistent across different pages. This fails WCAG 2.2 success criterion 3.2.3  Consistent Navigation.

We have reported these issues to the supplier and will update this statement when we receive further information.

Content that’s not within the scope of accessibility regulations

Some of the content on this website is third-party content, including user generated content such as eTheses.

Information on accessibility is included in our Deposit your eThesis guide. We recommend theses are submitted in Word format and have produced guidance for students on making their thesis accessible.

What we’re doing to improve accessibility

We have reported the issues identified above to the supplier.
