Welcome
Welcome to the Headingley Library self-guided tour. This will introduce you to key Library services and help familiarise you with the building. It should take approximately 15 minutes to complete.
During term time Headingley Library is open 08:00 – 22:00 Monday to Friday and 10:00 – 22:00 at weekends. During Christmas and Summer Vacations it is open 10:00 – 22:00 Monday to Friday and closed at weekends. Please see the Opening Hours page on the Library website for times when staff are available to help. You need your Campus Card to enter and to borrow books, laptops and equipment and use the printers.
Ground floor (1)
Enter the Library through the turnstiles. To the right of the turnstiles is a desk with both Welcome and Library and Student IT Advice points. Staff on Welcome can answer initial queries and help you find your way around. There are directories and floor plans on the floors and stairwells plus posters in the Library entrances with QR codes you can scan to access these on your phone.
- You can get support by phone or chat 24/7 plus face to face help at our Advice Points. The Library website (library.leedsbeckett.ac.uk) also has thousands of FAQs to help with your queries and our YouTube videos are a good starting point to using our systems.
- You may also be referred to other staff; for example our Academic Librarians, who can help you find information for your projects and dissertations.
Pause to view the ground floor.
- The machines on the left of the turnstiles are our self service machines which allow you to borrow and return resources. Undergraduates can borrow up to 20 items; postgraduate students can borrow 30. We automatically renew your loans unless someone else needs them. If you do need to return something we’ll email your University email account so remember to check it regularly. If you don’t return your item we’ll charge for the cost of the book.
- Next to the self-service machines is the Reservations area where you can collect items you have reserved (again we’ll send an email to let you know when these are available to collect).
- This floor contains a large group study area where you can bring in drinks and cold snacks. You can plug in your own device or use one of our many PCs.
- Opposite the Library and Student IT Advice desk are colour and black and white printers. There are printers and photocopiers on each floor although most of your assignments should be submitted electronically. Prices are displayed near the printers and you pay via online top-up in MyBeckett.
- MyBeckett is the University’s Virtual Learning Environment where you will find your modules and reading lists and submit your assignments. You can also view your University email account and timetable on here.
Cross the Library and continue to the corridor around the study area.
Turn to your right and walk down the corridor. Through the arches on your left, you will see our Print Journals. Keep this to your left as you walk towards the back of the Library.
We subscribe to over a million books, journals, databases and newspapers, searchable via our “Discover” search engine. Each subject also has an online guide on the Library website directing you to key resources and supporting your academic skills.
Turn left through the double grey doors at the back of the Library and take the stairs or lift to the first floor.
First floor
As you emerge from the lift or stairs you will see the Accessibility Toilet on your left. Other toilets are located in the entrances to the James Graham building.
Turn right, go through the double doors, turn right again and walk along the corridor past Student Meeting Rooms which can be booked online and the first floor Print Room (room JG133) on your right.
Turn left and walk along the corridor. On your right are Silent Study Rooms offering space for individual study and a large informal Group Study Room (room JG101) which also houses a coffee machine.
Turn round and on your right are doors to enter the Book Room. Go through one of these and walk through the centre of the room towards the back of the building.
- You can see books shelved in an easy to use colour-coded sequence; look for the posters on the ends of the shelves for details and more information on finding books in the Library. We also buy eBooks whenever possible and you can recommend stock via our Request It service.
- As well as providing resources the Library helps you develop your academic skills. There are study skills modules on MyBeckett; you can book onto a free workshop on topics such as academic writing, critical thinking, time management and statistics; or use the resources on the Skills for Learning website (skillsforlearning.leedsbeckett.ac.uk).
- There is also more study space, including PCs, in this room. You can plug your own laptop into many of the desks and access the wireless network (eduroam), available throughout the Library. You will need to add multi-factor authentication to your devices and use a strong password to keep your data safe.
- You can also download Office 365 and other software for free for the duration of your studies – see the Student IT Support page on our website.
Turn left as you exit the Book Room and return to the stairs or lift. On your right there is a room housing the School Practice Collection for students on teacher training courses.
If you wish you can also take the stairs or lift to the second floor. This floor contains IT labs which can be used when not booked for teaching – just scan the QR codes outside the doors.
Turn right, walk along the corridor and on your left you will find JG250 – an open access IT lab.
- In addition to lots of PCs this also includes docks for you to connect your laptop to a monitor and dual monitor workstations.
- If you walk through the lab there is a water fountain in the corridor beyond; this is also signposted from the corridors.
Retrace your steps and take the lift or stairs back to the ground floor.
Turn right and re-enter the Ground Floor.
Ground floor (2)
Walk across the back of the group study area and you will see more Library services on your left.
- The Disability Resource Area provides equipment, software and study space
- In addition, there are height adjustable desks and adjustable chairs throughout the Library, with assistive technology also available on the PCs and the Library’s Disability Support Team are available to offer help
- The Media Equipment and Staff IT Service Desk lends equipment such as 360 cameras, camcorders and GoPros.
- The lockers on the back wall of the building house laptops that you can borrow and use on campus for up to 8 hours.
