Welcome to Sheila Silver Library

Entrance

You need your Campus Card to enter. You also need this to borrow books, laptops and equipment and to use the printers. Please see our Opening Hours page for opening hours and times when staff are available to help.

Library Advice desk

Staff at the Library and Student IT Advice point can help with all your Library and IT queries. You can also get 24/7 Library and Student IT advice by phone or chat.

Media Loans

You can book media equipment such as camcorders, 360 camers and GoPros online and collect them from the Welcome desk.

To the right of the stairs are self service laptop lockers. You can borrow the laptops for up to 8 hours.

Toilets

Toilets are located near the lifts and stairs on the first, second and third floors plus an additional Accessibility toilet on the ground floor.

Hot Water Point

There is a new Hot Water Point on the 1st floor of Sheila Silver Library. You are welcome to use this to make yourself drinks (please provide your own cups and utensils and take them with you when you've finished). You can eat hot food in this part of the Library only. Cold food and hot or cold drinks may be consumed throughout the Library. 

Books

You will find the main book collection on the First, Second and Third floors of the Library. Different subjects are found on each floor. There is subject guidance on each floor. The books are organised using Dewey Decial System and each area is colour coded with guidance at the end of the shelves to help make them easier to find.

Study space

Each floor provides collaborative and individual study spaces. There are PCs, plug points and USB charging points for laptops. The first floor also has laptop docks to connect your laptop to monitors.

Group study room

There is a large group study room on the first floor. It offers a wide choice of work spaces for both group and individual work.

Silent study

There is a silent study area with power sockets for laptops and networked PCs on the 2nd floor for individual study.

Student meeting rooms

These are available on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd floors. You can book student meeting rooms online for two hours. Booking student meeting rooms in Sheila Silver Library requires email addresses from two members of your group from 1 September 2025. This is to prioritise group use in spaces intended for group discussions.

Individual study

Individual study can be carried out in our Individual Study Area on the third floor of the Sheila Silver Library, or through individual booking of a Student Meeting Room at Headingley Library. Meeting rooms in the Sheila Silver Library can still be used individually on a drop-in basis when they are not booked for group use. 

Print areas

There are printers on each floor. Prices are displayed near the printers and you pay via online top-up in MyBeckett.

Journals

Our bound journals can be found in the colourful rolling stacks on the 3rd floor. More than 99% of our journals are available online and these are some of the thousands of resources easily accessible via our Discover search tool.

Disability Resource Area (DRA)

The Disability Resource Area is on the third floor of the Library. It provides a silent, independent space for disabled students, with equipment and software.

Other study spaces

IT labs throughout the Library can be used by students when not booked for teaching.

There are dedicated Postgraduate rooms on the 2nd and 3rd floor.

Support for your studies

As well as providing resources, the Library helps you develop your academic skills. There are academic skills modules on MyBeckett, your virtual learning environment. You can watch online workshops on topics such as academic writing, critical thinking, time management and statistics, or use the resources on the Skills for Learning website (skillsforlearning.leedsbeckett.ac.uk). Our Academic Support team also provide one-to-one appointments, drop-in clinics and study cafés where you can work alongside your peers.
