The Library: Visit us

Welcome

Sheila Silver Library is open 08:00 – 22:00 Monday to Friday and 10:00 – 22:00 at weekends, and 24 hours a day at peak times. See the Opening Hours page on the Library website for times when staff are available to help. You need your Campus Card to enter, borrow books, laptops and equipment and use the printers.

The tour begins on the ground floor and then takes you up to the third floor. You will then make your way down to see the second floor, first floor, and back to see more of the ground floor.

Ground floor (1)

Enter the Library through the turnstiles. Staff on the Welcome Desk can answer initial queries and help you find your way around. There are QR codes in the Library entrances you can scan to access floor plans on your phone.

Pause to view the Ground Floor.

  • There are over 80 group study spaces on this floor, with USB and power sockets for laptops and mobile devices.
  • Wi-Fi is available throughout the Library via our eduroam network. You need to add multi-factor authentication (MFA) to your devices to keep your data safe.
  • The self service machines on your left allow you to borrow resources. Undergraduates can borrow 20 items, postgraduates 30. We automatically renew your loans unless someone else needs them. If you need to return something we’ll email your University email account. If you don’t return your item we’ll charge for the cost of the book. The self service returns machine is on your right next to the Welcome Desk.
  • The Reservations area is where you can collect items you have reserved (we’ll send an email to let you know when these are available to collect).
  • You can book media equipment online, such as camcorders, 360 cameras and GoPros. These can be collected and returned at the Welcome desk.
  • The Library and Student IT Advice Point is on the right of the ground floor. You can get Library and Student IT support by phone or chat 24/7 plus face to face help at our Advice Points. The Library website (library.leedsbeckett.ac.uk) also has thousands of FAQs to help with your queries and our YouTube videos are a good starting point to using our systems.
    • You may also be referred to other staff; for example our Academic Librarians, who can help you find information for your projects and dissertations.
    • You can also download Office 365 and other software for free for the duration of your studies – see the Student IT Support page on our website.

Walk towards the back of the Library. There are stairs through the glass doors and a lift, behind the stairwell.

To the right of the stairwell are self service laptop lockers which enable you to borrow laptops to use on campus for up to 8 hours.

Toilets are located near the lift and stairs on the first, second and third floors plus an additional Accessibility Toilet on the ground floor.

Take the lift or stairs to the third floor (you will then make your way back to the ground floor via the other study floors).

Third floor

The third floor provides group and silent study, books, IT labs and printing facilities.

Turn left as you exit the lift / right as you exit the stairs, to enter the main study floor.

Walk straight across the floor towards the windows and then turn right and walk down the floor, with the book shelves on your right and study spaces on your left, towards the front of the building.

  • This floor provides more social and group study space
  • The book stock on this floor is from 800 – 999 (the end of the collection) (literary criticism, history and geography) as well as the Law Collection (340 – 349). Look for the colour coded guiding on the end of the shelves and posters to help you find books in the Library.
  • Subject guides on the Library website direct you to key resources and support your academic skills.
  • This floor also contains our bound journals collection (visible through the book shelves in rolling stacks) but more than 99% of our journals are available online and these are some of over a million resources easily accessible via our Discover search tool.

At the end of the room turn right between the shelves holding our audio visual material and more study space in front of the windows.

  • You can also see resources for our art and design and music students displayed in this area.

Turn right past the journals display. Walk through the grey double door, past Student Meeting Rooms and an IT Lab (LSB305).

  • As well as the group study areas you can book Student Meeting Rooms online, for example if you want to practise a presentation or individually to attend an online lecture.
  • IT Labs throughout the Library can also be used by students when not booked for teaching – just scan the QR codes outside the doors to check.

Straight ahead is a door leading to a room dedicated to Postgraduate Students and a large Silent Study Area, enabling individual study, with power sockets for laptops and networked PCs (please don’t enter this area whilst on your tour so that students aren’t disturbed).

Turn right and walk through the Print Area.

  • This area includes colour and black and white printers/photocopiers (including a scan to email option) plus plenty of room for you to organise your work.
  • There are also print areas on the first and second floors of the Library, and colour and black and white printers can also be found on the ground floor, although most of your assignments should be submitted electronically. Prices are displayed near the printers and you pay via online top-up in MyBeckett.
  • MyBeckett is the University’s Virtual Learning Environment where you will find your modules and reading lists and submit your assignments. You can also view your University email account and timetable and other university information.

Once through the Print Area turn left, past another IT Lab and a second entrance to Silent Study, then immediately turn right though the breakout area with a water fountain and toilets.

Pause when the doors to the lifts are on your right.

Turn right to return to the lift or stairs and descend to the second floor.

Second floor

Again turn left or right respectively and enter the main study area.

Walk straight across the floor towards the window.

  • More collaborative study spaces enable you to work in small groups with plug points and USB charging points for laptops and mobile devices at each desk.

Turn right and walk down the floor to the front of the building, keeping study spaces on your left and books on your right.

  • Books on this floor are for 600 - 799 (health, business and the arts). We also buy eBooks whenever possible and you can recommend stock via our Request It service.
  • As well as providing resources the Library helps you develop your academic skills. There are academic skills modules on MyBeckett; you can book onto a free workshop on topics such as academic writing, critical thinking, time management and statistics; or use the resources on the Skills for Learning website (skillsforlearning.leedsbeckett.ac.uk).
  • Our Academic Support Team also provide one-to-one appointments, drop-in clinics and host study cafes where you can work alongside your peers.

Turn right and walk across the front of the building past more study space.

Turn right again, past IT Lab LS203 and the door to more Postgraduate and Silent Study areas.

Turn right through the Print Area and another break out area.

On your left are more Student Meeting Rooms and open access study booths.

Return to the lift or stairs and descend to the first floor.

First floor

  • The main study area provides a similar layout to the second and third floors with a mix of study space and book stock, covering 000 - 339 and 350 - 599 (psychology, sociology, social policy).
  • This floor also contains dual screen monitor stations and docks for you to connect your laptops to monitors.

Turn right (from the lifts) or left (from the stairs) towards an area with more Meeting Rooms and red sofa study booths straight ahead of you.

Turn left past these and go through a door ahead of you signposted for more Student Meeting rooms.

Ahead of you is Group Study (room LS105). This offers a wide choice of spaces for group work in a light and airy environment.

Walk through the room, leaving through the door on the left hand wall.

Turn left through another Print Hub, then left and right past another breakout area and water fountain, returning to the lift and stairs.

Descend to the ground floor.

Ground floor (2)

Walk across the floor towards the exit.
