These short videos from the Academic Librarians welcome you to the Library and academic skills, giving an overview of the support available to you. Please choose the video for your School.
If you are a new postgraduate student or a new degree apprentice, please select from the videos below:
Once you’ve enrolled you can take the First Year Study Smart module in MyBeckett to understand what it’s like to study at university, including how your assignments will be assessed and how to make the most of the support available to you. If you’re an international student you should take the International Students' Academic Introduction, a short online course to help you understand about studying and learning at Leeds Beckett.
Some lecturers may ask you to complete the module as a compulsory task during your first few weeks. After completing the quiz at the end of the module you can download a PDF certificate that can be used as evidence for completing the module.
You can also explore Skills for Learning to develop your academic skills throughout your course. On the website you will find guidance on topics such as critical thinking, essay writing, maths and referencing.
Library and Student IT Advice is available 24/7 to help you use University systems, software and Library resources; access your email, modules, and timetables; sign up to Wi-Fi; save your work and be digitally secure. There is information on buying a device before you start University and when you’re enrolled you can access a free Microsoft Office 365 subscription. We'll also support you to study and work collaboratively online.
There is a Library at Headingley Campus within the James Graham Building and at City Campus within the Leslie Silver Building. You can take a look at some of our spaces via the University's virtual campus tours and use our Library Visit Us page to see floor plans, self-guided tours and accessibility information. Please see our opening hours pages before you visit.
Both libraries provide spaces for silent and group study as well as bookable Student Meeting Rooms.
The Sheila Silver Library at City Campus has books that you can borrow on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd floors. At Headingley Library they are on the 1st floor. More information on how the books are organised and how to find them at each Library is on our Books page. You can use Discover to find specific titles or to see what books we have on a particular topic.
Once you have found the books that you would like to borrow, you can do this on the self-service machines on the ground floor of the Library - our How do I borrow and return items? FAQ explains how.
Thousands of electronic books, journals, databases, newspapers and multimedia resources are easily accessible via our Discover search tool so you can find the information you need for your assignments.
Your reading lists are available alongside your modules in MyBeckett and you can also view online guides created by our Academic Librarians, listing key resources for your subject.
Our dedicated web pages for international students, commuter students, distance learners or people who may benefit from Library disability support also tell you more about the support available to you.
